Meet

     MAHMUDA NASRIN

My name is Mahmuda Nasrin- I’m a community worker and a teacher. I had been teaching at the universities of Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia and Canada. I was born in Bangladesh. My father is a retired Additional District Magistrate of Bangladesh and my mother was the Headmistress of a Girls’ High School. I did my Bachelors with an Honors and an M.A. in English from Jahangirnagar University

I started my career as a lecturer of English at Mymensing Girls’ Cadet College. Then I taught English at the University Colleges through Bangladesh Civil Service. I got an Australian Government scholarship and did my second M.A. in TESOL from the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia. Then I joined at Khulna University as an Assistant professor. Bangladesh Government sent me to King Khalid University Saudi Arabia as an Associate professor. I became a professor there and immigrated to Canada with my family as a skilled immigrant in 2010. Since then, I have been living in Scarborough Southwest.

I am a writer- I’ve academic publications from Bangladesh, Australia, Saudi Arabia, UK, South Africa and Canada. I’ve a published Book- Canada- Bangladesh Diaspora Life. I am a newscaster in T.V.s in Bangladesh and Canada.I became a TESL Ontario certified English teacher and an Ontario certified Social Worker. I became and RCIC and IRB and started CanBangla Immigration Services. I am a Director of Bangladesh Alliance of Canada, U-Turns Community Organization and Bangladesh Funeral Services. I have been helping the newcomers with their settlement process in Canada. I've raised two children right here in Scarborough Southwest. I've packed their school lunches in this community. I've walked them to the bus stop on these streets. I've shopped at the same grocery stores you do, and like you, I've felt that knot in my stomach when I see the total at checkout.

Every time the rent went up, I felt it. Every time transit fares increased, it hurt our family budget. Every time I had to choose between buying my kids new shoes or paying for activities, it broke my heart a little.

I know what it's like to work hard and still struggle to make ends meet.

That's why I'm running. Not because I'm a politician, I'm not. I'm a mom. A teacher. A social worker. An immigrant who believed in the promise of this country.

I'm fighting for:

Affordable housing so families don't have to choose between rent and food.

Over $18 minimum wage so full-time work actually pays the bills.

50% transit fare cuts so getting to work doesn't cost half your paycheck.

Community food programs so no child goes to school hungry.

Free pharmacare because healthcare is a right.
